      <image:caption>Cosmos atrosanguineus (Chocolate Cosmos) On the left in the above photo, the velvety, rich, and deeply fragrant, Chocolate Cosmos represent that part of my garden where I still get to play. Their dark red-brown petals radiate warmth in golden hour light. Pollinator Value: These nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds with their abundant nectar and pollen, providing crucial energy when other blooms are fading. Garden Reality: Tender to our winters (annual). Perfect for adding that chocolate fragrance that makes visitors stop and ask, "Wait, what is that smell?" Sedum 'Autumn Joy' (Autumn Joy Sedum) On the right in the above photo, the flower heads shift from pale green to warm pink to rusty bronze. It's one of the last plants in my garden still buzzing with bees this late in the season. Pollinator Value: This sedum produces lots of nectar at a time of year when other plants do not, attracting honey bees, native bees, bumblebees, wasps, hover flies, and butterflies. The dried flower heads provide winter seeds for birds. What I've Learned: Cut back in spring, not fall, when new growth begins to emerge. Leaving them standing supports the entire ecosystem through winter.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62bb3b4ad7e28830ec7c98c7/16c5a77b-44ce-485e-a113-158af35529a2/PortlandFallGardenTipsPearlyEverlasting</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - SUPPORTING WILDLIFE IN FALL - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Anaphalis margaritacea (Pearly Everlasting) Here's where my garden shifts. Pearly Everlasting is a native wildflower with soft silver tones and papery white blooms. Quiet. Enduring. Exactly what the ghost of summer should look like. Pollinator Value: This native provides nectar to adult butterflies, bees, and other insect pollinators, and serves as a caterpillar host plant for Painted Lady and American Lady butterflies. Based on Oregon State University field trials, Pearly Everlasting is associated with two species of mining bees and is also commonly visited by the Everlasting Tebenna moth, and sweat bees. For months, even as other flowers fade, Pearly Everlasting remains alive with honeybees, pollinator wasps, syrphid flies, and native bees. Why This Matters: This is our only true native in today's feature. The difference in pollinator activity is noticeable. Native plants have co-evolved with local insects over millennia. They speak the same language.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62bb3b4ad7e28830ec7c98c7/26af2ddf-2a4e-4bbe-9e2f-eba526708d07/PortlandFallLandscapeAnemone</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - SUPPORTING WILDLIFE IN FALL - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Anemone × hybrida 'Whirlwind' (Japanese Anemone) These semi-double white anemones glow even on gray days. They represent the bridge in my design evolution: not native, but incredibly valuable to pollinators when they need it most. Pollinator Value: Japanese anemones provide lots of pollen for bees, with both honey bees and bumblebees eagerly visiting the flowers. Bumblebees especially favor Japanese anemones, employing "buzz pollination" techniques to help loosen pollen from the plants' tightly constructed anthers. The open flower structure provides comfortable landing spots for various bee species and hover flies. The Balance: Not every plant in a regenerative garden needs to be native, but every plant should earn its place by serving the ecosystem.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - SUPPORTING WILDLIFE IN FALL - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Schizachyrium scoparium 'The Blues' (Little Bluestem) Little Bluestem grass is the backbone of my fall garden. Its silvery-blue blades shift into rose, copper, and violet as the weather cools, catching the light like spun glass. Wildlife Value: Little Bluestem provides cover for ground birds and small mammals, and the seed is eaten by songbirds and upland gamebirds. The clump-type growth habit provides excellent nesting sites, and seeds are consumed by rosy finches, juncos, chipping sparrows, field sparrows, and tree sparrows. It serves as a host plant for skipper butterfly caterpillars, provides nesting material for native bees, and supports grasshoppers, beetles, and leafhoppers that feed insectivorous songbirds. What I Know Now: Leave it standing through winter. It's beautiful under frost, but more importantly, it's functional. Grasses are infrastructure for the entire food web.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - SUPPORTING WILDLIFE IN FALL - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Echinacea purpurea 'White Swan' (White Swan Coneflower) White Swan Coneflower is a Blueprint Earth mascot. When goldfinches visit daily, you know the garden still has plenty to offer. Pollinator Value: Although we love this white cultivar. The true value lands with the Midwest, Eastern and Southern American native, Echinacea purpurea. Coneflowers are nectar-rich and highly attractive to honey bees, native bees, leafcutter bees, bumblebees, butterflies (including monarchs, tiger swallowtails, skippers, American ladies, and red admirals), and ruby-throated hummingbirds. Purple coneflower blooms during the summer dearth when there are often fewer flowers blooming that honey bees will use. Echinacea purpurea is a host plant for the caterpillars of the silvery checkerspot butterfly. Once flowers go to seed, goldfinches, sparrows, and chickadees devour the seeds. The Truth: Leave the dried seed heads standing through winter. Choose single-flowered varieties, not double-flowered "pom-poms" that hide nectar and pollen.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Erigeron glaucus (Seaside Daisy) + Erigeron glaucus ‘White Lights’ This native coastal daisy brings a soft, cheerful energy to the garden. One variety has lavender petals and the other has white, but they both attract a constant flurry of bees and hoverflies. I love how it nestles easily between rocks or cascades over low walls, softening edges with its fluffy green foliage. It’s also impressively resilient, happy with sandy soils and tolerant of dry spells. A great ground cover. Garden Insight: Plant this where you want color and life without high maintenance. It thrives with minimal water and offers months of bloom if deadheaded regularly.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - June in Bloom - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Cotula ‘Tiffendel Gold’ Ground-hugging and endlessly charming, Cotula ‘Tiffendel Gold’ is spreading like a carpet of golden buttons across my sunny borders. Drag your hand across the top to make them dance. The finely textured foliage almost disappears beneath the bright button-like blooms, creating a light green mat similar to yarrow. It’s especially good trailing over gravel paths. Garden Insight: This will spread. Easy to pull out in areas you don’t want it, but you’ll need to pay attention.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - June in Bloom - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Ozothamnus ‘Sussex Silver’ Though this plant is more known for its shimmering foliage than its blooms, its clusters of tiny white flowers offer subtle charm. The silver leaves reflect light beautifully and make a brilliant contrast to deeper greens or dark-leaved companions. This plant is not for the uniformed gardener. Its shape is abstract and funky. Garden Insight: I think of this as my garden's quiet star, architectural, evergreen, and extremely drought tolerant. A great background player that elevates neighboring colors.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - June in Bloom - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Brachyglottis greyi (Daisy Bush) I mostly planted this shrub for its silver foliage, but right now its clusters of bright yellow daisy-like flowers are very cute and not overpowering. It’s both structural and sunny, one of those rare shrubs that looks fantastic year-round. Garden Insight: A powerhouse for coastal or dry gardens. Prune lightly after flowering to keep it compact and bushy.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62bb3b4ad7e28830ec7c98c7/974cc447-3dd1-464d-883e-9563bec9a77a/CamilleJune_11.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - June in Bloom - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Helichrysum thianshanicum (Silver Spike) Though its flowers are still just beginning to open, it’s the foliage that steals the show here. It’s so light and silvery it’s almost ghostlike. I will say, this plant seems to be the only one that is not loving its current location. It’s leaning over to one side, clearly wanting more sun than I’ve given it. Garden Insight: Use this to add softness and reflectivity to your planting palette. It contrasts beautifully with bold flowers like kniphofia or digitalis.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - June in Bloom - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Kniphofia ‘Shining Scepter’ This torch lily variety sends up blazing spikes of orange-gold blooms that catch the eye instantly. Put these babies somewhere they’ll catch the golden hour sun and you’ll stop dead in your tracks. Hummingbirds are especially fond of this one, and I can often spot them darting in and out of the fiery flowers. Garden Insight: I’m really impressed with how well it blooms in the more shady areas of my garden. It doesn’t seem to need much sun at all. Xera Plants nursery in SE Portland currently has a variety called ‘Toffee Nose’ that is another favorite of mine, and good for anyone that wants a little less neon in their life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - June in Bloom - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) Achillea is a workhorse in my garden, reliably blooming and providing texture with its finely cut foliage. The creamy white umbels are open now, and they pair beautifully with ornamental grasses and other sun lovers. It’s a native to this area and pollinators adore it. Yarrow has great medicinal properties as well. Try rubbing the leaves on cuts and wounds to promote quick healing. Garden Insight: It’s one of those plants that bridges wild and cultivated spaces. Cut it back after flowering for a second flush later in the season.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62bb3b4ad7e28830ec7c98c7/54bb9509-7723-44a9-bbe5-63e8f64aab25/CamilleJune_8.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - June in Bloom - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Digitalis parviflora (Chocolate Foxglove) Not your typical foxglove, this is definitely my weirdo of the garden. With rusty, chocolate-toned flowers they are a subtle but striking addition. They also mimic the shape of the kniphofia in a way that I enjoy. I love how the brown color interacts with the oranges and purples. Garden Insight: It’s not flashy, but it adds sophistication. Perfect for gardeners who love a more muted, naturalistic palette. They reseed on their own and are super low maintenance.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>In the "before" image, you can see a pipe protruding from a stacked rock retaining wall, directing excess stormwater to nowhere and creating erosion issues. The plants in this area are sparse and need to be replaced with ones that will thrive in the current sunlight exposure. Take note of site-specific issues like erosion, stormwater concerns, and the health of existing plants—whether they need to be addressed, relocated, or replaced with more suitable varieties.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - Create a Thriving Garden - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>In our design, we created terraced retaining walls that divide the vertical space and create a sense of visual balance. We also incorporated plants that will thrive in this sun exposure such as Carex 'Everlime' and Achillea millefolium 'Little Moonshine'.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>In this project, the property already had retaining walls in place, but erosion had developed due to inadequate stormwater management techniques. It was important to our work that we slope the landscape away from the foundation of the house so we're maintaining the integrity of the foundation and not watering it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blueprint Earth Blog - Create a Thriving Garden - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Here, you can see the retaining walls we installed to manage the slope, along with a small rain garden positioned behind to prevent erosion. We designed the rain garden as a low point to collect water runoff and gently sloped the pathways to direct the water flow in the desired direction. This approach not only maintains the integrity of the hardscapes but also creates a beautiful centerpiece for the garden..</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Before our arrival, clients had directed rainwater from downspouts to the street and and eventually the sewer through flexible pipes. Portland has a combined stormwater and sewer system that is frequently overwhelmed during heavy rainfall, causing untreated water to flow into the Willamette River and Columbia Slough. With Portland's growing population, the volume of untreated water flowing to natural waterways likely increase. When you manage stormwater on-site, you become part of the solution to Portland's water quality challenges.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Blueprint Earth was established in 2020. Though it started small, we are proud of and grateful to the community of designers, contractors, and partners it has grown into. We employ a stellar team of inhouse landscape designers and contractors. We also assemble a team of our favorite subcontractors to support each project. We make our best effort to engage local vendors and workers through all stages of the process and enjoy supporting local small businesses. Together, we are a one-stop shop, coordinating all of the people and pieces to get your project built.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About The Founders - THE FOUNDERS</image:title>
      <image:caption>Blueprint Earth started out as a husband and wife duo, Brit and Eric Sastrawidjaya. One part landscape designer/contractor, one part arborist, two parts passion for bettering the environment around us. We are deeply rooted in the green industry with well over a decade of experience each. We use our leadership to foster a team of designers and contractors who drive your garden project every step of the way. From design through build, curating your garden (and the experience of making it come to life) is our magic.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About The Founders - THE design TEAM</image:title>
      <image:caption>Born and raised in the PNW, Landscape Designer Camille is deeply connected to this region. With a background in art, farming, and floristry, her design practice is inspired by a deep appreciation for the natural world. She focuses on creating resource-efficient landscapes by using local materials, climate-adaptive plants, and innovative stormwater solutions. Camille hopes that by caring for our landscapes, we can build a stronger connection to the places we call home. Her dream job? Transforming unused parking lots into pocket parks. Outside of work, Camille enjoys gardening, spending time with her toddler, and painting (under her alter-ego, Camille Shu. You can see her work here.).</image:caption>

      <image:title>About The Founders</image:title>
      <image:caption>Julie Coleman is passionate about building a more sustainable world and connecting people to place through design. Her background spans architectural studies, urban studies, and sustainability, with hands-on experience transforming urban spaces into community gardens, pollinator habitats, and urban farms that reconnect people with food production and the land. Julie holds a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture. Her design work focuses on creating spaces for gathering, prioritizing native and climate-adapted plantings, and integrating beautiful stormwater solutions that keep water on site. At the core of her practice is a desire to help people engage more deeply with their landscapes in ways that invite curiosity, encourage time outdoors, and foster long-term stewardship of the land.</image:caption>
